The biggest news of the month was Doug and Vanessa welcoming their baby boy, Aiden Christopher O’Brien, to the world. Watauga Aiden was born on July 19th at 8 pounds, 5 ounces, and 20 inches long. We are so happy to have a new, adorable addition to our family. Dan & Maureen were there to greet him at the hospital and Kathryn was able to visit him the following weekend. Aiden is super cute and his cousins John, Larkin, and Reagan and his uncle Paulie can’t wait to meet him someday soon.

The O’Brien-Kindem families began the month at their Watauga Lake cabin. The entire family, except for Doug and an expecting Vanessa, were able to attend (we missed them very much), so that meant 17 of us were there. Fortunately, our neighbor was kind enough to lend us their cabin for the week, so we were able to spread out a little bit. The week was filled with great food, good conversations, lots of swimming and boating, and just a couple adult beverages (wink, wink). One of the highlights of the trip was John and Larkin learning how to swim on their own. John and Larkin were not afraid of the water, but at first had the desire to be held or in a raft. However, miss independent, Larkin Lu, decided on day 2 that she wanted to swim all on her own. Paul would let go of her and she would swim to one of her other family members. Larkin had an extremely determined look on her face each time she set out to swim to someone, but a huge smile would emerge as she was grabbed by her doting caretaker. What a joy this was to see. It took John a couple more days of being in the water, but around day 5 he worked up the courage and was swimming by himself. John had a smile the size of the Grand Canyon as he swam and by the end of the week, both were staying in the water for hours at a time, sometimes with their teeth chattering. Continue Reading →

As the anniversary of Jamie’s passing approaches, my heart continues to become heavier and heavier with grief. In remembrance, I reflect on Jamie and I’s last full work week together and it brings warmth in my heart and a smile to my face.

Jamie’s last full work week was her best ever at SAS! Hmm, you may ask yourself “how can that be?” Well for starters, our boss was out the entire week on vacation, which meant we could come and go as we pleased.

Jamie didn’t have to rush in dropping off “The Adorables” and make it to work by 8:30am. Instead, she enjoyed her ride to school and work, stopped and picked up breakfast in Building C (egg white omelette) and casually walked into the office before 9am. Some days, she even had a Starbucks’ concoction in tow. Of course, the barista knew her order! Continue Reading →

She was a girl of Air and Fire
Of love and smiles and great Desire
I caught her on her way Uphill
Seeking dreams she would fulfill.

She had a ways to go she said,
She’d stop and stay awhile instead.
And for three years we laughed and sighed
“Where are my dreams?” she often cried.

Then off she flew from Coast to Coast
“To find my dreams!” she’d loudly boast.
To find the Path so right and true
To set her life aright, Anew.

And there he stood, her man of choice
To help her find her One True Voice.
Along came twins, so sweet and small
To fill the home with dearest Paul.

Then came another, with her Farewell
That angel whom we’d loved so well.
She left behind three babes so dear
To keep her dreams alive and near,

To show us all some hope in sorrow
That she lives on in their tomorrow.
And though our hearts are broken still
We smile at all her dreams fulfilled.

She’s only just a thought away
A memory of a sweeter day,
When Jamie Girl would laugh and dance,
And tilt her head and give a glance

Then rest her head upon our heart
To kiss our tears and then depart.
So, now and then I feel her wings
An angel’s song she often sings:

“Expand your life, your dreams and songs,
And find out where your heart belongs!
Be fearless in your deep Desire
And let yourself be Air and Fire!”

Dear Jamie,

Last night I put a very overly tired baby Reagan to bed and as is the norm, I thought of you the whole time. As I was feeding Reags her bottle and rocking and singing to her, I stared up at the pink puffs on the ceiling and quietly cried thinking of you. I cried, like I do most nights that I put her to bed, thinking how proud you would be of this little girl; I think of the quotes on the wall that I had to put up without you; I think about how I hope that I put them up the way you wanted; I hope that the framed fabric pieces are hung in an arrangement you’d like; We still need to get a mirror with a white frame to go to the right of her crib, because that’s what you wanted; I wish I didn’t insist that you couldn’t see the bed skirt I was making until it was finished. I wish I at least showed you the fabric, because you would have loved it. The bed skirt on the other hand, well let’s just say that I clearly have not yet mastered the art of sewing. The very first weekend of June was spent up in Philadelphia for Paul, Kat, Dan, Maureen, and The Adorables. To make things a little “easier,” we divided and conquered; Reagan rode up with Grandma and Grandpa and John and Larkin rode up with Kat and Paul. According to her grandparents, Reagan was beyond amazing for the entire car ride, even with the famously horrible DC traffic. John and Larkin were amazing in the car as well. Although, no matter how good they behave, managing two toddlers, especially two toddlers who are potty training for a 7 (or turned out 9) hour car ride gets quite exhausting. The kids talked about the big tunnel (through Baltimore) constantly, read books with Ki, colored in their coloring books, ate lunch/snacks, and when Ki and Paul needed a short break, they watched a kids music DVD, which turned out to be a life saver (although I think we had those songs stuck in our heads for weeks after the trip). When Jamie was alive, I loved to look at her smile. It was the best smile I ever saw! We loved to spend time together. When I found out that she was having twins, I was so happy for Paul and Jamie. When I first saw them they were so cute and handsome. Their names are John and Larkin. My family and I watch them grow up. Then a year later, they were having another girl. While I was at camp, Jamie was eating dinner. She did not feel good, so they took her to the hospital and gave her medicine, but it did not work. So they had to take the baby out and she died right there. The month or two after she died it was so hard to believe that it happened. Giving life to the new baby girl (named Reagan) was the last thing Jamie did. Reagan, John, Larkin, Paul and Jamie are the best. Before this happened, Jamie and Paul would have us over many times. We would play with the kids, have a dance party, eat pizza, and get our nails done. I am so happy to have an Aunt and Uncle like that. We still have sleep-overs at our house with the kids. I am still not used to not seeing Jamie. I really miss her beautiful smile.

I want Paul to know, he has a great future ahead of him and with the kids.

It’s been an especially rainy spring for North Carolina. Typically we are preparing ourselves for a drought, but this year it feels like we are living in London or Seattle. Very strange indeed. However, the weather doesn’t stop us from spending many of our days and hours outside. The trees, birds, grass, and occasional sunshine certainly helps the mind stay at ease & allows the kids to expand their creative minds and very importantly, release their energy. John enjoys getting wet & most of all enjoys jumping in and throwing sticks in the puddles. He gets great joy in walking back & forth over puddles and likes to look inside all of the water valves along the sidewalk in our neighborhood (hopefully a spider won’t get him). Larkin is much less pleased with getting wet and wants a hooded jacket on & finds it quite unacceptable when her shoes get the slightest bit of water on them. Reagan seems indifferent with the weather and simply enjoys watching her older brother and sister play. John and Larkin also love taking turns pushing Reagan’s stroller down the sidewalk. Although it scares us adults from time to time when they refuse to allow us to help, we think little Rea enjoys the competition that ensues over who gets to care for her. As long as Reagan is a part of things, she is happy. Continue Reading →

Dear Jamie,

I am entering a new and exciting stage in my life. I am less than 2 months away from being be a Dad! It’s so crazy, I still can’t believe it. We are having a boy and we decided on the name Aiden Christopher. I know you would love the Irish name and that Christopher is a nod to Gramps. It makes me so sad though that I never will get to share this or other good news with you. You were my favorite person in the world to tell good news to. Your reactions were always so genuine and full of love, and you always made sure that I knew it. I can’t wait for my son to meet your kids. J you would be so proud of all of them. They are the most amazing kids I have ever met, and I am not just saying that because I am your brother. They are each so unique and adorable in their own way, but they also all share the qualities that you loved in people. They are kind, adventurous, loving, smart kids and just like us they love to dance.

You would be so proud of your husband too. He is truly one of my favorite people in the world. He has been such an amazing father to your children. He is so good with these kids and they in turn love him so much. Along with Dad, he has given me another true role model to look up to as I start my own journey as a father. I am so grateful that you chose such a wonderful person to be your partner. You know I always wanted a brother and you couldn’t have picked out a better one. Continue Reading →

When Barry and Kennette (me) went to visit Jamie, Paul and the twins when they were 3 months old, we fell in love. They were so small still, yet their personalities were already showing. They both coo’ed and smiled easily and were in our arms as much as they would let us. It was such a precious age. The greatest joy for both of us was seeing beautiful Jamie so good at her role as a mommy. She was so tender, loving, and attentive to the needs of each one.

The first thing that struck me about Larkin were her eyes. They were so unique and yet familiar. Perhaps they reminded me of her mommy. Some pictures of Jamie as a child seem to confirm it. However, there was another little girl Larkin reminded me of: Cindy Lou of WhoVille from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Jamie was sweet and agreed completely and the name Larkin Lu was born. I’m trying to attach the picture of Cindy Lou so all can see the similarity (which she may hate later in life!). Hopefully, Paul can help with that. Continue Reading →

John, Larkin, and Reagan grew by leaps and bounds during the month of April. More specific details to follow, but in summary, Reagan had her Christening and has started crawling and standing up on furniture; John and Larkin are beginning to speak in complete sentences and both are showing much more interest in using the potty (especially Larkin).

Reagan Roo is totally on the move. She started off a bit slow, but after a couple of days was going after the dog bowl (yes, her favorite item to find and get totally wet), standing up on furniture (often falling over), and trying to steal John’s yellow truck (typically doesn’t end well). Reagan is the 3rd child, just like her father and Aunt Ki, so we have a strong feeling that this trend of her trying to keep up with her brother and sister is one that will stick around a lifetime. Reagan is trying her best to move on from baby food as well. It didn’t take us long for us to figure out when she was “over” basic baby food because she would zerbert (spit it out) each time you gave her food, which didn’t work out too well for our faces or clothing. Grandpa (Dan) must have gone through a dozen shirts before figuring out how to get out of the way. The zerberting might not of lasted as long, but with John and Larkin in the audience laughing hysterically, she was not about to stop. Continue Reading →
